Sometimes everyday life moves so quickly that we only realise too late how little we are in touch with ourselves. Our breath is always there. Becoming consciously aware of it can be a simple place to start: pausing for a moment, shifting our focus from our minds to our bodies, and sensing what is happening right now.
From 23 to 25 October 2026, the Waldhotel Tannenhäuschen in Wesel is hosting the workshop ‘Breathwork: Time for You’. The breathwork sessions will be led by Ina Schulte. In this interview, she explains how she discovered breathwork herself, what fascinates her about working with the breath, and why it’s not about performance.
From thinking to feeling
Ina discovered breathwork through her work with the subconscious. She is particularly fascinated by how directly the breath can open up access to one’s own body and emotions. “I was particularly fascinated by how directly we can access our bodies and our emotions through the breath,” she explains. For her, change sometimes begins when we stop trying to solve everything with our minds alone and instead involve the body.
For Ina,embodied breathwork means not just using the breath as a technique, but experiencing it within the body. “We step out of our thoughts and back into our sensations.” Breathing can help us anchor ourselves in the present moment and become more aware of bodily sensations or emotions – even those that are often overlooked in everyday life.
A safe space, at your own pace
A breathwork session with Ina begins deliberately calmly. Participants settle into the room and into their own bodies, initially focusing their attention on their breath. Ina then guides them step by step through different breathing phases and offers prompts for body awareness.
It is important to her to create a safe space. Nobody has to achieve or do anything in particular. Everyone is free to proceed at their own pace. “It’s not about having to achieve or perform a specific task, but about being aware of what is happening right now.” According to Ina, no prior experience is necessary to take part. She explains in advance what will happen in the workshop and what might occur during the exercises.
Ina asks participants to discuss any specific health conditions in advance. These include, in particular, cardiovascular or respiratory conditions, epilepsy, pregnancy and other relevant physical or mental health conditions. Together, they can then determine which form of breathing work is suitable.
A gentle breathing break for in between
One of Ina’s favourite exercises is the prolonged exhalation. She recommends breathing in relaxed through the nose and then breathing out a little longer – for example, in for four seconds and out for six. This can be repeated for a few breaths whilst observing what changes.
Important: Do not force anything. Your breathing should feel comfortable. If you feel dizzy or unwell, stop the exercise and return to breathing normally.
Three days, three approaches
On Friday, the programme begins with settling in, an introduction and some useful information about the breath. Participants will also start with a breathing practice for everyday life.
On Saturday, they’ll be introduced to the Embodied Breathwork method and take part in a session lasting around an hour. Reflection and integration then provide space to let the experience sink in.
On Sunday, the focus is on two further breathing techniques. One is designed for relaxation, the other for energising. Finally, the session looks at how to incorporate suitable exercises into one’s own daily routine.
What Ina hopes to give participants
By the end of the weekend, Ina hopes that participants will feel a little more connected to themselves. She hopes they’ll take home the realisation: “I don’t always have to be functioning, analysing or already on to the next thing. I’m simply allowed to be here.” She describes the breath as something that is always available: for pausing, becoming aware and settling into the present moment.
